Thank you to all who tuned into our latest members-only virtual hangout, Culture Clash! Doing Business Abroad Without Faux Pas.
The Google Hangout event was led by our Executive Director of Dallas, Texas, Korina Smith. Our speakers were Sergio Cecutta of SMG Consulting, Elizabeth Vennekens-Kelly of Cross Culture Training, and Gloria Peterson of Global Protocol helped to answer many questions that people have had when interacting with professionals in other cultures.
Korina spoke about the simple everyday practices or greetings that take place in our country, how they are extremely important when dealing with a foreign company, while elaborating on topics that regarded the political policies that may affect how they conduct business and how negotiations practices might differ in each culture.
Sergio stated that many other countries use different forms of negotiations such as a dinner or coffee meeting because they want to get to know you before they do business with you. And, in regards to the U.S. policy, he says that US companies have the most detailed and extensive contracts he’s ever seen!
These speakers also elaborated on different celebrations that they have experienced while in another country when a business deal is successful. When Elizabeth conducts business in foreign countries she experienced celebrations that lasted for hours! What all speakers seemed to agree on were the ideas that you must understand the customs of the country in which you want to do business and creating a long lasting relationship should be the ultimate goal.
Our next virtual event is taking place in December live on Google Hangout for members and collaborators of Global Chamber.
