Outlook for Mexico 2018

Last week we heard from experts on opportunities for foreign businesses in Mexico. The panelists discussed the performance of the Mexican economy in 2017, offered their thoughts on the outlook for 2018 and shared specific opportunities for cross border companies.

For this event we focused on three regions... Guanajuato, Queretaro and Sonora. David Farca of International Business group moderated the discussion with experts.

Mexico is the 15th largest economy in the world in nominal terms and the 11th largest by purchasing power parity according to the International Monetary Fund.

Speaker Bios

David Farca - President, International Business Group. Born and raised in Mexico City, David started his first business in the retail industry, selling accessories and gifts during his high school years.  David graduated from UI (Universidad Iberoamericana) with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, which created the opportunity for his second venture in the medical field distributing surgical lasers. David’s opinion in designing and specifying digital imaging departments became very well respected throughout Mexico becoming a business column writer for “Diagnostic Imaging America Latina” a Miller Freeman Publication and a Board Member of the Mexican Society and the Mexican Federation of Radiology (SMRI and FMRI). 

Dr. Manuel de Jesús Gómez Zaldí - Department of Economics at University of Guanajuato - Manuel is originally from Tapachula, Chiapas. He holds a degree in Economics from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, a Master's and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Arizona State University. He has been a professor and researcher at the Department of Economics and Finance of the University of Guanajuato for fourteen years, 2003 to date. He is also professor of the subject for the Tecnológico de Monterrey for seven years, 2010 to date. Researcher of the Regional Studies Division of Banco de México for two years, 2015-2016. Fulbright visiting researcher at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, in the 2013-2014 academic year. Manuel is also a member of the National System of Researchers (SNI) since 2006, and since 2016 CONACYT promoted him to level III.

Dr. Luis Núñez - Federal Delegate of Economy Secretariat in Sonora - Luis is an economist who graduated from the University of Sonora, has a Master’s Degree and a PHD in Economy from the University of Arizona. He is the Federal Delegate of the Secretary of Economy in Sonora since 2013. He´s been a researcher in the at Center of Research in Food and Development (CIAD AC) For 22 years. Dr. Núñez was president of the School of Economists of Sonora from 2002 to 2010 and Vice president of the National School of Economists from 2004 to 2006. He´s been recognized for his support and trajectory by The Secretary of Economy, Intellectual Property Institute, Civil Engineers College in Sonora,  National Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (CANACO), University of Sonora, Technological Institute of Sonora (ITSON), College for Studies of Business and International Commerce (CENCI) and other institutions.

Guillermo Gaxiola Astiazarán - Owner at SOLUCINT.  Guillermo is an Industrial Engineer and has a Master Degree in Business Administration from Tec de Monterrey. He also attended IPADE where he got a diploma in Management. He is the Academic Director a Universidad Estatal de Sonora (Sonora State University). He’s worked at corporations related to Food Processing as a CEO and now is working in family corporations providing a variety of services and plays a role as stockholder and counselor.  He is also a Professor at Higher Education Institutions specialized in subjects as Strategic Management. In the last 5 years Guillermo has worked as a Coach on several courses with Small Business owners and their staff, mainly in Leadership, Problem Solving and Team Work. Some of Guillermo’s areas of specialty include Strategic Planning, Management and Funding of Small Family Business.
