We held our monthly Exporting, Importing and FDI News globinar on Friday at The Global Chamber. We kicked off with global trade and business leader William (Bill) Edwards, CFE and included more leaders from the global tribe to understand understand what's going on so that we all can make better decisions in the coming days and weeks.
Watch the recorded conversation here.
Bill kicked things off and created clarity on what's going on, and began the analysis.
Some highlights...
- LA Port traffic is 40-44% lower than that same time in 2024
- There's a drop in Chinese factory production by 45% vs 2024
- U.S. Christmas is on the bubble... typical production time is May-July
- De minimus shipments stopped TODAY, 4M --> zero, here's what that means
- Trade agreements are being processed between the US and 18 countries
- One of those countries is NOT China, with tariffs as high at 145%
- His expert opinion of what likely will happen next... thank you, Bill!
- Are you in SoCal? Join the regional DEC for OC Trade Week May 28th here
Thanks to everyone who contributed from all over the world!
We finished just in time, and sorry we didn't have all the time we wanted with everyone. Thank you Anthony De Filippis for building on Bill's comments and giving your expert observations and analyses as well! Anthony shared how there are new and historically high numbers of inquiries on duty mitigation, use of duty first sale, changing Incoterms and other ways to get trade done.
Thanks to RAŞIT KUŞKAYA who shared opportunities in and out of Turkiye, Robert (Rob) Arthurs based in Canada, Brian Swords with a Japan update, Sharon Matike based in Cameroon and Ghana - who shared more from Africa - Elizabeth Glynn, Christopher Scalisi, Kellie Greene, Eduardo Gonzalez and more.
We learned from Brian Swords about Japan's plan to invest over $60B per year in the US, and how ship traffic is backed up in the Port of Vancouver, in Rob's back yard. We also learned how the apparel industry is evolving between Turkiye, Egypt and the world.
It's interesting to see the perspectives around the world with the current situation, where in the U.S. and key countries it's about tariffs. In other parts of the world, it's about China - and how to find ways to mitigate the risks today. On this point, Sharon Matike mentioned the proverb..."When elephants fight, the grass gets trampled." And opportunities develop for all.
Global trade globinars happen every day in different Global Chamber chapters around the world, AND we do this particular NEWS globinar on the first Friday of each month....next is June 6th here.
See you at SelectUSA soon! And along the way - let's take advantage of the changes and opportunities.
