January 16, 2020 Book Review Session ,The Responsible Globalist by Hassan Damluji

Hassan Damluji is Deputy Director at the world’s largest philanthropy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Reporting directly to Bill Gates, he leads a global team responsible for policy and advocacy across the Middle East, Pakistan, Japan and Korea. He is co-founder of the $2 billion Lives and Livelihoods Fund, the largest multilateral development fund based in the Middle East. He has been named every year since 2015 as one of the 100 most influential Arabs under 40, by Arabian Business magazine.

According to an Amazon book review, ‘globalists’ have a bad rap. They are portrayed as concerned only with international networks and ignore their foreign policy effects on local nations and local communities. Nationalists, however, are often portrayed as racists and bigots. Damluji believes they are not adversaries, but that globalists and nationalists have much to teach each other based on his six principles from “changing how we think about mobility to shutting down tax havens”.

“With a wealth of examples from the United States to India, China and the Middle East Dumluji develops his strategy of how globalism and nationalism can merge.
