Independence from Spain

Panama's independence from Spain on November 28, 1821, meant the isthmus was no longer under Spanish rule and, importantly, chose to voluntarily join the newly formed Republic of Gran Colombia alongside modern-day Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. This was a bloodless declaration of sovereignty, but it did not result in Panama becoming a fully independent nation at that moment.
