Speakers (Details)

Trevor C. Jones, Founder and CEO of Lynx Global Intelligence. Trevor will give a summary of global risks facing business in 2020. After a survey of emerging risks, Mr. Jones will discuss how new technologies like big data visualization can help risk managers get a better perspective of their project environments. This will include showing the visualizations of some datasets that demonstrate political, social and environmental risk. Finally a Q&A will conclude the luncheon, giving attendees a chance to ask questions about both risk and technology.

Trevor C. Jones founded Lynx Global Intelligence in 2016. Mr. Jones' background includes research focusing on geopolitical risk, intelligence studies and complex decision making during humanitarian crisis. He served as a Fellow at both the Denver Council on Foreign Relations and Secretary of State for Colorado and has presented his research on Complex Adaptive Systems to the United States Department of State and the International Association of Genocide Scholars. He is a member of US Global Leadership Coalition and serves on the Board of the Denver Global Chamber where he assists in facilitating international trade and promoting Denver as a global city. Trevor holds a BA Psychology from Tulane University in New Orleans and an MA in International Security from the University of Denver.

Lee Connor, President of John C. Connor, Inc. Lee is President of John S. Connor, Inc., a Baltimore based freight forwarder, customs broker, NVOCC and ship agent. He is responsible for the strategic direction and operations for the firm which was established in 1917 and currently operates in six locations.  He began his career in the family business while in high school and has been involved in the logistics and international trade industry since 1973.

After graduating from University of Baltimore School of Law in 1981 Lee joined the company full time and worked in a variety of positions in both air and seafreight operations. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of Connor in 1988 and assumed his current position as president in 1991. He is also the Honorary Consul of Belgium for Baltimore. In addition to being a member of the Maryland Bar he is a licensed Customs Broker and serves as the qualifying individual for the Company FMC license. His professional experience includes service on numerous maritime, aviation and transportation committees and task forces. He has also served as president of the Maryland Coal Association, an External Advisory  Group member for the University of Baltimore, Center for International and Comparative Law and a Board member for the National Customs Broker and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA). His work with NCBFAA has included 5 years as Chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee where he has been involved in industry advocacy on Capitol Hill. He is currently Chairman of the Baltimore Port Alliance. He is married with four children and currently resides in Ellicott City, MD.

Ann Florini, Faculty, Thunderbird School of Global Management. Ann Florini is Clinical Professor at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Arizona State University, where she directs programs at the Washington DC campus. Her teaching and research focus on the climate crisis, energy policy, and cross-sector collaborations involving business, government, and civil society. She has previously taught at the National University of Singapore, where she founded and led the Centre on Asia and Globalisation, and at Singapore Management University, where she created and ran the unique Masters of TriSector Collaboration.  She has held senior appointments at a number of think tanks and research institutes, including the Brookings Institution, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Center for International and Strategic Affairs at UCLA, and the United Nations Association of the USA. Throughout her career, Professor Florini has spearheaded major international projects focused on innovative approaches to global problem-solving and governance for such organizations as the Initiative for Policy Dialogue and the World Economic Forum. Her numerous books and articles have addressed China’s governance, transparency and information flows in governance, the roles of civil society and the private sector, and climate and energy policy. Professor Florini received her Ph.D. in Political Science from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Master’s in Public Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.

Ethan Kapstein, Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University. Ethan B. Kapstein is currently Arizona Centennial Professor of International Affairs at the School of Public Affairs and Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. He is also Associate Director of the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project at Princeton University. Kapstein's research focuses on international economic relations and economic development, with a particular focus on conflict-affected states. He has served in the U.S. government, the U.S. Navy, and in international organizations. His current research is examining U.S. efforts to promote private enterprise across the developing world during and since the Cold War.

Brett Bruen, President of the Global Situation Room & Former Director of Global Engagement at the White House. We live in an increasingly uncertain times. It has never been more difficult to navigate the changes, challenges, and to create new opportunities around the world. From cyber security to terrorism, threats appear around every corner. During twelve years as a U.S. diplomat, Brett became a specialist in using strategic communications to influence the course of crisis and conflict. As Director of Global Engagement at the White House, he coordinated the United States Government’s public diplomacy, international media, crisis communications, and global entrepreneurship programs. He is now a leading expert on counter-crisis management theory, a term he coined during his time on the U.S. National Security Council.

A CNN investigation documented his visionary leadership of the US Government’s initial response to Russian propaganda in 2014. When more than 200 school girls were kidnapped in Nigeria, Brett created the Let Girls Learn campaign, which Marie Claire called, “one of the most critical things to remember from the Obama White House.” While in the diplomatic service, Brett worked in the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Guinea, Iraq, Venezuela, Argentina, Zambia, and Eritrea.

In his current role as President of the Global Situation Room, he runs a consulting firm that specializes in helping clients navigate their most complex communications challenges. He teaches crisis communications at Georgetown University and sits on the boards of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Foundation at Harvard University and the Clinton Institute at University College Dublin. He is a Columnist for Business Insider and is regularly interviewed by major media outlets on world events. Brett speaks fluent Spanish and French.
