Amid free trade negotiations between the United Kingdom and Australia, coupled with The UK announcing that it looks to formally apply to join a free-trade partnership that includes countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, and Singapore. It has never been more important for global business to be aware of the deeper driving forces that bring about successful trading opportunities.
International Trade Secretary Liz Truss in the UK discussed the move with ministers in Japan and New Zealand early in January 2021 and requested to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The impact of joining CPTPP will cut tariffs in trading with its 11 members along the Pacific rim, which also include Mexico, New Zealand, and Vietnam. UK trade with the group last year was worth £111 billion.
Australia and the UK have a significant relationship underpinned by a shared heritage, common values, strong people-to-people links, closely aligned strategic outlook and interests and substantial trade and investment links. The Australia–Japan partnership is its most mature across Asia for Australia and is fundamentally important to both countries' strategic and economic interests. The relationship is underpinned by a shared commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, as well as common approaches to international security.
Australia and Japan also share deep and longstanding trade and investment ties. Japan was Australia's second-largest trading partner and second-largest export market, and third-largest source of foreign direct investment at the end of 2019. The series...

Dominic Carter - Representative Director and CEO at the Carter Group. Dominic has devoted his career to demystifying the Japanese consumer (and perhaps even more importantly, de-risking the market for his clients). He is known for being a clear-eyed consumer insights practitioner and entrepreneur. Today, he manages a team of over 40 researchers. They work with a wide range of clients based in Japan and overseas, including many household names. Their assignments cover the gamut of objectives from market entry strategy to innovation planning, brand architecture and customer tracking to social and climate advocacy.
Haruna McWilliams - Head of Accounts at Tokyoesque. Haruna has spent over 20 years in advertising as a Strategist in the world's major markets including Japan, UK, US, Singapore and now the Netherlands. Her past clients include Unilever, Google, Airbnb, Coca Cola, J&J, Tiffany & Co. and Suntory.
Kirsty Wilkinson - Deputy Director for Global Chamber® Melbourne. In addition Kirsty is Principal and Founder of Asia Market Makers. She founded Asia Market Makers about six years ago to help businesses wanting to export to Japan, teach Japanese language and culture and empower translators and interpreters with the right skill set for their businesses to flourish.
Originally from Whyalla, Kirsty has lived in Melbourne for over 15 years after returning from London and is committed to helping companies be more global and successful with a focus on Japan, UK, Europe and the U.S. She has lived in 3 Australian States and 3 countries (UK, Japan and Indonesia), and travelled extensively.

Meet Katie Keith, a British / Australia Citizen, originally from a small colonial town on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia. Katie moved to the UK in 2016 to pursue international career exposure, and to complete her master’s degree at Henley Business School. Katie is now pleased to call the UK home.
As a Thought Leader with 20 years’ experience within the Institutional and Retail Banking space, Katie has extensive exposure to corporate leadership, business growth and change management strategies within the corporate and finance sector.
Katie operates her Executive Coaching & Business Consultancy practice and works closely with companies such as Equals Group Plc, and Business Networking International (BNI), focused on developing and managing business growth and corporate partnership opportunities.
Katie also works very closely with prominent business networks in the UK focused on connecting decision makers and business owners into her global network. Having recently been appointed as the Executive Director within the Global Chamber, Katie’s mission is ‘to make a big world small’ one genuine and authentic business connection at a time.
