Speakers - Consuls General and Ambassador

Consul General Anil Adenan assumed her position as the Consul General of Malaysia in Los Angeles in August 2021. A career diplomat, Anil Adenan has served Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia (MFA) for 18 years in various capacities.

Consul General Anil Adenan had served overseas as Second Secretary and Counsellor at the Embassy of Malaysia in Santiago, Chile (2007-2010) and Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Malaysia in Paris, France (2014-2017). 

At the Ministry, she had served in Multilateral Affairs Department, East Asia Division and CLMVO Division. She was the first female Special Officer to the Secretary General. She is now the first female Consul General of Malaysia in the North American region. 

She holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from Tulane University in New Orleans, USA. She also holds a Diploma in Public Administration from the National Institute of Public Administration, Malaysia (INTAN). 

 

Ambassador Hoang Anh Tuan is Consul General of Viet Nam Consulate General in San Francisco, California, the United States of America, for a 3-year term of service, starting from November 28th, 2022. Prior to assuming this position, Ambassador Tuan served various positions such as Vice President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Political-Security Community and the Ambassador of Viet Nam to Indonesia and concurrently the non-resident Ambassador of Viet Nam to Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste.

Ambassador Tuan carries with him over 31 years of experience, serving various appointments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam both as a diplomat and a researcher. One of such appointments was the Minister Counselor position at the Embassy of Viet Nam in Washington D.C.

As a researcher, Dr Tuan has worked at various think-tanks around the world, including Norway, Denmark, Singapore and Sweden. He has published extensively on Viet Nam’s foreign policy; politics and security inSoutheast Asia; U.S. and China’s policy towards East and Southeast Asia as well as major power relationship,particularly the Sino-US relations.

Ambassador Tuan obtained his PhD in International Relations and MA in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA under the Ford Foundation and Fulbright scholarships respectively. Ambassador Tuan is married to Dr. Le Thi Tuyet Mai, who is currently PermanentRepresentative of Viet Nam to the UN and the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland. Ambassador Tuan and Mdm. Mai have 2 grown-up sons.

 

Consul General of the Philippines in San Francisco, Hon. Mr. Neil Frank R. Ferrer has consular jurisdiction over Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Northern California, Northern Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington State, and Wyoming. His tour of duty as Consul General began on 20 January 2021. Consul General Ferrer is a career diplomat with extensive experience in the foreign service, including consular work, bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. He has served in various capacities at the Philippine Embassy in Beijing, China (2001-2003); Philippine Embassy in London, United Kingdom (2003-2009); and Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, Canada (2011-2013). He was Consul General of the Philippines in Vancouver, Canada from 2013 to 2018.

Prior to his assignment to the U.S., Mr. Ferrer served as Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs of the Department of Foreign Affairs in the Philippines from August 2018 to January 2021. Consul General Ferrer served as Chairman of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, United Kingdom from 2007 to 2011. The MSC is the senior technical body of the IMO and Mr. Ferrer is the only Filipino diplomat thus far who has been elected as MSC Chairman. Mr. Ferrer presided over numerous international meetings of the IMO and led global efforts to improve maritime safety and security.

Mr. Ferrer served as President of the IMO Diplomatic Conference of Parties to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW Convention), held from 21 to 25 June 2010 in Manila, Philippines. This Conference adopted major revisions to the STCW Convention and its associated Code, now referred to as the Manila Amendments. The Conference also adopted a resolution nominating 25 June of each year (the day when the amendments were adopted) as the Day of the Seafarer. The Day of the Seafarer has now been included in the annual list of United Nations Observances.

Consul General Ferrer is recipient of a distinguished award for Filipino diplomats, the Gawad Mabini, with the rank of Dakilang Kamanong (Grand Cross), conferred by the President of the Republic of the Philippines on 29 June 2010.

Mr. Ferrer finished his Master of Arts in International Boundaries, with Distinction, at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom. He completed the course work for the Master of Science in Economics at De La Salle University and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of the Philippines. Consul General Ferrer is married to Miriam M. Ferrer and they have four children.

Victor Tan - CEO of Oryx Advanced Materials. Oryx Advanced Materials is a US-based company established in 1999 in Fremont, CA. The company has become a leading manufacturer of high-quality, high-purity materials for various thin-film applications, such as magnetic data storage and photovoltaic (PV) solar panels.
 
Oryx has a wholly-owned Malaysian manufacturing subsidiary in Penang, which was established in 2000. The subsidiary is fully certified in ISO 9001, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 22301:2019, ISO 45001:2018, and EN 9100:2018. Additionally, the company maintains a logistics handling and customer service office in Singapore.
 
Prior to founding Oryx Advanced Materials, Tan served as VP and GM of Oryx Technology Incorporated. His previous work experience includes serving in various technical/management roles in industries such as electric power, telecommunications, and petroleum. Tan received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University and his master's degree from the University of Nebraska.

 

Dr. Lieza Danan - CEO of LiVeritas BiosciencesPrior to her position as co-founder and CEO of LiVeritas Biosciences, Lieza, a serial biotech entrepreneur in the San Francisco Bay Area, held scientific operations and strategic advisory leadership roles in the biopharma industry for over 10 years and honed her expertise in mass spectrometry analytics for two decades.

As Co-Founder & CEO/COO/CSO at InterVenn, Dr. Danan spring-boarded the AI-driven glycoproteomic platform company from Seed to Series A, raising $9.4 million. Serving as a mass spec function lead and key contributor to biotech startups Stemcentrx (acquired by AbbVie) and Sutro Biopharma (IPO), she made a name for herself as a leading authority on phase-appropriate implementation of mass spec in drug development. While the Genentech Pilot Site Lead and Principal Scientist at Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories, Lieza developed a strong interest in all phases of drug development.

She holds a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of California at Davis and a B.S. in Chemistry (Honors Program) from the Ateneo De Manila University. Lieza’s other passions include empowering Asian-American leaders in the sciences toward entrepreneurship using holistic approaches, including positive psychology and spirituality. To reset, she plays with her orange tabby, KB, named in honor of Prof. Klaus Biemann, one of the Founding Fathers of Mass Spectrometry.
