Globinar Southern Africa as an Investment and Trading Destination - Legal Perspectives (Part 1)

This will be a two-day event to discuss and connect with members of the African Continental Legal Alliance (ACLA) on legal perspectives on trade in the countries that make up the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The event will be a collaboration with the Global Chamber and will be an opportunity for participants to learn much more about investment laws and ways of doing business in Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, which are all countries in the SADC.

Speakers:

Jeffery Daar  - Senior Principal at Daar & Newman, Lawyers (United States)

Jeffery Daar is a principal of the law firm Daar & Newman in Los Angeles, USA. The firm is a long established general practice law firm dedicated to providing the highest quality of representation to its clients, including acting as a gateway for international business both inbound to and outbound from the U.S.

Mr. Daar’s expertise includes strategic planning, complex state and federal litigation, innovative dispute resolution, and international transactions and disputes. His practice focuses on both litigation and transactional projects. His extensive litigation background gives him added insight into structuring transactions for clients along with his entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving and dispute resolution. He has served as a City Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles for more than 15 years and was Chair of The State Bar of California International Law Section. Mr. Daar holds a law degree from the University of California at Davis and a bachelor’s degree from Claremont McKenna College.

Mathapelo Kanono - Deputy High Commissioner of Lesotho to South Africa (Lesotho) 

Deputy High Commissioner of Lesotho to South Africa. A seasoned diplomat and an Attorney with over two decades experience in legal services, diplomatic relations, bilateral and multilateral cooperation.  Board member of Lesotho Radiation Protection Agency. Nuclear lawyer and nuclear technology specialist with over 14 years’ experience of the use of nuclear technology in cancer treatment, crop and livestock production; water resources management; industrial applications; and production of nuclear energy. 

Co-founder of three private companies in property development, agribusiness and use of nuclear technology. Passionate for entrepreneurship, business development, inclusive growth and sustainable development. Ms Kanono holds a master’s degree in International Law focused on investment and international trade law from the University of Vienna, Austria; and Post Graduate Diploma in Nuclear Law at the University of Montpellier, France.

Niyi Sanusi - Partner at The Throne Legal Associates (Nigeria)

Niyi Sanusi is a lawyer who is qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He has a first degree in Political Science and a Bachelor of Laws, both from the University of Lagos.

He is the Managing Partner of The Throne Legal Associates with practice areas including company/commercial law, corporate practice, business law, intellectual property, investment advisory and due diligence, among others.

In addition, Niyi serves as Advisory Board Chair for Global Chamber® Lagos and as Deputy Director. He is a member of the African Continental Legal Alliance (ACLA), which is a network platform for law firms across Africa. Niyi is Director of a startup mining company called Zaki Mining Limited as well as Trustee of the non-profit organization, The Misrah Leadership Centre.

Whenever he is able to, he also conducts visitation to incarcerated persons on counseling and voluntary social/charity work. Niyi plays chess and likes to watch football.
