Globinar Southern Africa as an Investment and Trading Destination - Legal Perspectives (Part 2)

This will be a two-day event to discuss and connect with members of the African Continental Legal Alliance (ACLA) on legal perspectives on trade in the countries that make up the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The event will be a collaboration with the Global Chamber and will be an opportunity for participants to learn much more about investment laws and ways of doing business in Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, which are all countries in the SADC.

Speakers:

Tarryn Poppesqou - Director of Futcher & Poppesqou Incorporated (South Africa) 

Tarryn Poppesqou is a Director of Futcher & Poppesqou Incorporated. Ms. Poppesqou graduated with a Bachelor of Laws Degree, Cum Laude from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2008. Thereafter she completed her Masters in Business Law in 2011. Since graduation Ms. Poppesqou has been active in the legal field practicing law at various levels. Ms. Poppesqou has dedicated herself to the area of labour law and litigation. She has been a member of SASLAW (South African Society for Labour Law) since 2015. In 2018 and 2019 she sat as the Vice President of SASLAW KZN and in 2020 and 2021 she sat as President of SASLAW KZN.

In addition, Ms. Poppesqou has for many years attended and provided Probono assistance at the Durban Labour Court in conjunction with SASLAW’s Probono office. Ms. Poppesqou was further instrumental in the implementation of the Probono virtual project implemented in 2020 in response to the COVID pandemic.

In addition to her experience in the labour arena, Ms. Poppesqou has provided advice on aspects of consumer credit law, including the Protection of Personal Information Act. She has further acted as in-house legal counsel for one of South Africa’s largest banks. Ms. Poppesqou is a regular speaker at the annual SASLAW conference. Where her topics in relation to labour law keeps the audience informed and updated of changes in the legal system and the importance of its impact.

  

Mark Futcher - Director of Futcher and Poppesqou Incorporated (South Africa) 

Mark Futcher is a Director of Futcher and Poppesqou Incorporated. Mr. Futcher provides labour and commercial litigation services throughout South Africa and in all industries. Mr. Futcher graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (IR hons) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1994 and thereafter completed his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1998. With over 30 years’ experience in the field of Labour Relations and Employment Law, and further experience gained through exposure to the business sector, Mr. Futcher has gained the necessary understanding, skills, knowledge, and empathy with which to approach related tasks, clientele, staff members and colleagues.

Having sat as an Acting Judge of the Labour Court on a number of occasions, has given a greater insight into the intricacies of the Legislative framework in the Labour environment. He is also a member of SASLAW KZN (South African Society for Labour Law). Mr. Futcher’s approach to leadership is to believe that everyone has the ability to succeed and that with a little guidance and assistance, a person can be moulded into someone of understanding character and exude their own uniqueness and talents within the workplace. Mr. Futcher believes that, in his practice, this approach has worked well and continues to produce a strong cohesive team.

 

Angela Chikamba Mwalula - Partner at Ndemanga Mwalula & Associates (Zambia) 

Angela Chikamba Mwalula is a seasoned legal professional with over 16 years of extensive experience in commercial litigation, company law, contract law, and employment law and has dedicated her career to advancing justice and providing legal expertise. Angela is a Partner and Co-Founder of Ndemanga Mwalula and was prior to setting up her firm, Litigation Head of the Zambia National Commercial Bank Plc, one of Zambia’s leading Bank and was instrumental in the successful delivery of judgments in complex litigation cases for the Bank. Angela is a Nelson Mandela Scholarship recipient and a Master’s Degree Holder in International Trade and Commercial Law from the University of Essex United Kingdom. She has over the years proven instrumental in navigating complex legal challenges, including conducting litigation across various courts and providing legal guidance to multiple departments within the bank. Her key skills encompass legal drafting, stakeholder management, and strong analytical capabilities. Angela is a member of the Law Association of Zambia, firmly establishing her commitment to the legal profession. Angela Mwalula's robust combination of legal expertise, leadership, and community service continues to impact the Zambian legal landscape positively.

 

Sandra Ndemanga Wamulume - Managing Partner at Ndemanga Mwalula and Associates (Zambia) 

Sandra Ndemanga Wamulume is an accomplished legal practitioner and corporate governance expert based in Lusaka, Zambia. With over 20 years of experience in commercial, banking, and finance law, she is the Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Ndemanga Mwalula and Associates, a prominent corporate law firm that offers a full range of legal services. A graduate of the University of Zambia with a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB with Merit), Sandra holds a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance from the University of London. She is also a product of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and has earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education, further enhancing her expertise in governance and compliance.

Before establishing her own firm in September 2020, Sandra served as the Head of the Legal Department at the Zambia National Commercial Bank, the largest Zambian-owned bank. In this role, she provided legal guidance to senior management and the Board of Directors, ensuring the bank’s compliance with regulatory frameworks. She played a pivotal role in negotiating several syndicated loans with international banks and successfully argued the landmark Supreme Court case, Zambia National Commercial Bank vs. Muyamwa and 89 others, which resulted in a historic decision. Sandra’s commitment to advancing the legal profession and corporate governance in Zambia is evident in her appointment as the first female Chairperson of the Rating Valuation Tribunal.

She also serves on the boards of various organizations, including Flutterwave Zambia and the Zambia Daily Mail Limited, demonstrating her versatility and influence in both the finance and media sectors. An expert in security perfection, loan documentation, and commercial litigation, Sandra has testified as an expert witness in the Commercial Division of the High Court in the UK in a multi-million-dollar case as an expert in ZambianBanking and Financial law. Her dedication to excellence and her extensive professional background makes her a leading figure in Zambian law and corporate practice

Bridget Mafusire  - Experienced Regional Legal Advisor (Africa) (Zimbabwe) 

With a robust career spanning 15 years, Bridget is a legal and business professional specializing in international trade, policy advocacy, stakeholder relations, and capacity-building initiatives across Sub-Saharan Africa. She brings a wealth of expertise in legal advisory, legal project management, fundraising, and training development, with a deep commitment to supporting social enterprises, civil society organizations, government, and other stakeholders in navigating complex legal landscapes.

Bridget founded Astertax Consulting in Zimbabwe to provide advisory services that combine legal expertise with strategic business advice for impact-driven results. Prior to founding Astertax, she worked with top legal firm DLA Piper Africa Manokore Attorneys, providing advisory services in real estate development, public-private partnerships, and international trade law. She has also held prominent roles in government, advising on international trade and acting as legal counsel for several high-profile initiatives.

In addition to her legal expertise, she is committed to continuous learning and development. She holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Economic Law and has received specialized training in areas such as impact investing, sustainable development, and systems change. Bridget is a certified Data Protection Officer and a member of several professional organizations, including the Law Society of Zimbabwe and the Pan African Lawyers Union.

Bridget also dedicates her time to various volunteering roles, including serving on the National Steering Committee for the UNDP Global Environment Facility/Small Grants Program in Zimbabwe, where she provides advice on community-based environmental initiatives. She is a Board Member of Silver Linings Trust Zimbabwe Homes, supporting education and decent accommodation for individuals with special needs, and serves as a Trustee on the Dzuka Africa Trust Advisory Board, advising on programmes related to women- and youth-led enterprises in Malawi.

Niyi Sanusi - Partner at The Throne Legal Associates (Nigeria)

Niyi Sanusi is a lawyer who is qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He has a first degree in Political Science and a Bachelor of Laws, both from the University of Lagos.

He is the Managing Partner of The Throne Legal Associates with practice areas including company/commercial law, corporate practice, business law, intellectual property, investment advisory and due diligence, among others.

In addition, Niyi serves as Advisory Board Chair for Global Chamber® Lagos and as Deputy Director. He is a member of the African Continental Legal Alliance (ACLA), which is a network platform for law firms across Africa. Niyi is Director of a startup mining company called Zaki Mining Limited as well as Trustee of the non-profit organization, The Misrah Leadership Centre.

Whenever he is able to, he also conducts visitation to incarcerated persons on counseling and voluntary social/charity work. Niyi plays chess and likes to watch football.
