Dr. Michelle Boone-Thornton - Founder of The Unmasking Guru | Assistant Professor and Assistant Program Director at Regent University
Ambassador Michelle Boone-Thornton, Ph.D. has championed education from kindergarten through college, following in her parent's footsteps who were both educators. She believes that learning is a reciprocal process that creates a natural interactive exchange of ideas, visions, and creativity, producing a unique opportunity for the teacher and learner to extend personal boundaries, create new constructs, and experience the vulnerability and strength of the human spirit.
Ambassador Boone-Thornton holds a bachelor’s in Social Work and a minor in Sociology from Christopher Newport University. She earned a Master’s in Urban Education Guidance and Counseling from Norfolk State University. Her doctorate from Regent University is in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Research. She is certified through the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Qualified Mental Health Provider with a specialization in children, with her therapeutic modalities including individual, group, and family therapy.
Ambassador Boone-Thornton serves as the Assistant Program Director, of Doctorate in Counseling at Regents University. Teaching and publication efforts that are child and mental health-related include, developing two online courses HUS 337- Intellectual Disabilities and HUS 342- Child Welfare. She has authored chapters in (2) books, Community Partnering for the Advocacy of Mental Health, and Women, Minorities and Criminal Justice: A Multicultural Intersectionality Approach. She recently published a journal article in 2021, Teaching in a Pandemic Era: Special Considerations addresses the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable students including migrants, undocumented, those on the spectrum, and those with emotional and behavioral disorders. In addition, Michelle co-authored and presented an international paper in Spain and was a visiting professor at the Universidad de Comillas in Madrid Spain, in June 2019.
Professionally, Ambassador Boone-Thornton has over 25 years of experience in the field of mental health. She is a therapeutic foster parent for the City of Hampton, (2012-present) and has provided training to foster parents throughout cities and counties in Virginia helping families provide care for children with emotional and behavioral disorders across settings. Ambassador Boone-Thornton teaches courses throughout the year for the City of Hampton’s Citizens Unity Commission: Diversity College.
