Gary Al-Smith - Content Producer
Gary Al-Smith has 15 years of experience in media as a broadcaster, new media specialist and media communications professional primarily focused on shaping African narratives. A leader his field and respected worldwide, Gary’s core competencies include sports broadcast rights acquisitions (radio, TV and digital media), deployment of new and traditional media to influence agenda and over a decade’s worth of experience in the news and sport business.
An alum of the Ghana Institute of Journalism and Ghana Institute of Management & Public Administration, Al-Smith’s local education dovetails with work experience honed in multicultural settings across Africa, Europe and the Middle East since 2008. It is this mix that has made him a sought-after asset for global brands.
Gary has forged a career as a thought leader in positioning African stories on the world stage. His work has been featured on world-renowned platforms such as CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Sky Sports, New York Times, The Athletic, SuperSport, and more—cementing his decade-long reputation for trust and excellence.
One of the brightest stars of African media, Gary joined the Sporty Group in March 2024 after nine years with the Multimedia Group, where he had served as Head of Sports for its radio, TV, and digital platforms – while being instrumental in broadcast rights acquisitions for major sporting events across channels. In just over a year of being in this new role, Gary has led a team to launch SportyFM, the first and only 24/7 sports radio station in the 90-year history of Ghanaian broadcasting. Following the success of this project, the concept is shortly to be replicated across several African countries.
Known for his strong opinions, Gary followed this passion to become a member, and then Curator, of the World Economic Forum’s youth arm – the Global Shapers. Since 2016, Gary has also been an official UNICEF Ghana influencing ambassador, with a specific remit to amplify the Fund’s work on issues pertaining to the rights of children.
In 2023, Al-Smith was adjudged Ghana Sports Journalist of the Year, and has often spoken of a dream to open a network of local community media training centers to teach the next generation how to bring local nuance to global media assignments, like he has done for almost two decades.
