Utah Valley University Offers a Special Opportunity for Global Businesses

We're offering global businesses a special opportunity to utilize the time and talent of our students and staff.

At Utah Valley University (UVU) our emphasis is on engaged learning – making education practical. In a win-win for our students and our business partners, the MBA Capstone class gives MBA teams the opportunity to solve pressing business problems for business clients by applying the key principles they’ve learned during their MBA program. This year we're offering members of Global Chamber® this opportunity.

As the professor for this Capstone class, I’ve spent 20 years in consulting, primarily for large firms. I bring that professional discipline to the student projects and find that the student teams often surprise and impress their clients with the quality of their work. Additionally, we assign full-time business faculty as mentors to each project team.

Our past projects include:

  • Market analyses
  • Analyses of supply chains and operations
  • Corporate valuations
  • Development of marketing campaigns

Each team has 6-7 students and they are expected to put in at least 20 man-hours as a team each week. Our typical process for these consulting engagements includes:

  • Development of scope and engagement letter (2-3 weeks: completed by first week of June)
  • Data collection & analysis (4-6 weeks; completed by mid-July)
  • Development of recommendations (1-2 weeks; completed by end of July)
  • Final report presentation (last week of July)

The client determines the deliverables but they typically include a PowerPoint presentation and an executive summary. Other clients also request a written report of findings and recommendations, as well as supporting spreadsheets.

For the projects to be a success, we request that the client meet with the students at least every two weeks. This can occur at UVU or at your facility. The more data/information that the company makes available, the higher quality the outcomes. Frequently our clients ask the consulting teams to sign non-disclosure/non-compete agreements.

At the same time, we find that students bring significant value to their community partners and clients. For these services, there is a small fee used to cover the costs of the faculty mentors.
