As Executive Director of the Society for the Improvement of Rural People (SIRP), he leads sustainable development initiatives aligned with SDGs 1–5, including menstrual hygiene outreach to over 6,000 girls, STEM SPORTS integration in schools, and rural water access. His consultancies with UKDFID and USAID span governance reform, education sector strengthening, and gender-focused HR systems.
A champion of gender equality, Dr Ugwu coordinated MenEngage Nigeria (2020–2025), mobilizing men and boys to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Marriage. His advocacy helped institutionalize the Child Rights Law (2006) and VAPP Law (2019) in Enugu State, reducing FGM prevalence from 85% to 10–15%.
